Fluid physics instrumentation study. Part 3: Breadboard description and test results
Abstract
A breadboard of a proposed optical diagnostic instrument for fluid physics research in microgravity was built and tested. The influence of changes at subsystem level were investigated. Vignetting, resolution and distortion of the whole-field system; vignetting and resolution of the interferometer; diagnostic performance of the breadboard using a test experiment set-up (thermal plume); observation tests with a measurement problem, i.e., a block of Schlieren-free optical glass that simulates a class of fluid physics experiments; and instrument operation are described. Further research areas and hardware improvements are identified.
