Enhancement of the energy extraction efficiency in free-electron lasers by means of a tapered axial guide field
Abstract
A technique for the enhancement of the energy extraction efficiency in free-electron lasers is discussed which makes use of a tapered axial guide field. The physical configuration consists of a monoenergetic electron beam propagating through a region in which the static external magnetic-field is composed of a helically symmetric wiggler and an axial guide field. The analysis is given for operation in the strong-pump (i.e., Compton regime), and the radial gradients in the wiggler are assumed to be negligible. Results of the analysis indicate that for a realistic choice of parameters, efficiency enhancements of as much as 100 percent over the efficiency in the case of a uniform guide field are possible with only modest gradients to the axial field.
