Monitoring and calibration of active phased arrays
Abstract
An electronic radar (ELRA) system for checking the operational performance of a phased array antenna, by monitoring the performance of some selected parameters, such as gain, beamwidth, sidelobe level, or boresight direction, is described. The ELRA monitoring system employs a near-field testing method for monitoring and calibration of about 1100 active modules. The initially hardwired measurement equipment of the system has beven replaced by a more flexible, microcomputer-aided solution. ELRA simplifies the maintenance work on the phase array antennas, by analyzing errors and pointing to potential causes of malfunction, and can serve as a research tool in studies directed toward investigating the effects of environmental or other factors on daily phase behavior of phased array modules.
