Automated lidar for the sounding of stratospheric aerosol
Abstract
A YAG-laser lidar is described which is designed to measure the space-time characteristics of stratospheric aerosol. A microcomputer system makes possible the real-time processing of the lidar data. Vertical profiles of scattering ratio are presented which illustrate the performance of the system. It is concluded that this lidar system can be used to study aerosol stratification in the lower stratosphere and the effect of volcanic activity on the optical characteristics of the stratosphere.
