Modes of acceleration of solid projectiles of low electrical conductivity in rail guns
Abstract
Results of a study of the acceleration of low-conductivity solid projectiles (e.g., tungsten, steel, and titanium) by means of an additional highly conducting accelerating conductor in ordinary rail guns and in rail guns with a magnetization circuit are reported. The maximum projectile velocities are estimated, and it is shown that the use of a magnetization circuit makes it possible to increase the maximum velocity limited by the heating conditions. Calculations are presented for a steel projectile with an accelerating conductor of D16T alloy.
