High power millimeter wave governer limiters
Abstract
The realization of 94 GHz radar systems requires protection of the receiver channels from peak impulse inputs. It is necessary to attenuate a 1 kW signal by 40 dB when the receiver can tolerate a 100 mW return. A Si PIN diode is described for use as a low loss limiter for peak power shielding. The diode is operated in an automated, active mode with a commutation time of no more than 3 microsec. It is from 0.32-0.42 mm high, pure Si, and can handle a 1.6 kW pulse. A 4 kW pulse is theoretically tolerable. Extensive physical and material characteristics of the device are provided, together with a numerical electrical model of its operational principles.
