Limitations of constraint dynamics
Abstract
Relativistic Hamiltonian constraint dynamics based on first-class constraints (classically or quantum mechanically) suffers from severe limitations. We show this here for the case of the two-body problem in relativistic quantum mechanics by a comparison with the Nambu-Schwinger-Bethe-Salpeter equation. The corresponding equation in constraint dynamics has a kernel that restricts the interactions to the elastic case: the individual particle energies are conserved in the center-of-mass frame.
