Approximate solutions for the momentum transport in turbulent flows in narrow rod array bundles using the finite element method
Abstract
A method was developed for the calculation of turbulent flows in larger, connected rod arrays with small rod distances, with a view to the design of rod array bundle with turbulent flow. The mathematical formulation of the flow phenomena in incompressible, isothermal flows, and the modeling of turbulence properties are presented. A novel algebraic turbulence model is explained. The finite element method as a numerical solution method, and the construction of the grid are presented. The comparison with measured channel flows show that the accuracy of the simulation is sufficient for technical requirements and that the high vortex viscosity parallel to the wall is a very essential parameter for the determination of the azimuthal momentum transfer. In the domain of small rod distances the method is superior to the existing one.
