An automated measuring system for the investigation of the heat conduction in a wide Knudsen number range
Abstract
Data regarding the heat conduction in gas mixtures for a wide Knudsen number range are needed in many cases, including applications related to space flight, the flight at high altitudes, and vacuum technology. An exact calculation of heat conduction data in the cases of interest is not possible, and an experimental determination of the data is necessary. An automated approach is needed because of the large amount of data required. The present paper is concerned with a suitable automated measuring system, taking into account a study of mixtures of water vapor and nitrogen. It is pointed out that a time of approximately 15 years would have been required for a manual conduction of the measurements reported in this paper. The theoretical basis for heat conduction relations in the case of simple gases and gas mixtures is considered along with the experimental apparatus, the software for the evaluation of the measurements, and the results of the reported study.
