Shock wave measurements in gas-particle mixtures for the investigation of mass transfer under Knudsen conditions
Abstract
The behavior of gas-particle systems with fluid particle phase in shock wave flows was investigated, emphasizing particle evaporation behavior in the Knudsen domain (Knudsen number between 0.01 and 10). The mass transfer at high temperatures was experimentally and theoretically investigated, and a correction method for the description of the mass transfer in the Knudsen domain was developed. The strong nonequilibrium between the phases in the shock wave enables a good observation of the relaxation phenomena. The particle size changes were clearly determined. A single particle model starting from the balance equations for a two-phase continuum was developed. By a variation of the correction method, agreement was obtained between the experimental results and the results of the model calculations.
