Selective effects in the collective acceleration of ions of various charges in plasma diodes
Abstract
Mass-spectroscopy experiments on ion acceleration by an electron beam produced from the plasma of a pulsed vacuum arc show that the ions which are accelerated in the diodes are predominantly multiply charged - Al(2+), Al(3+), Cu(3+), Cu(4+), Pb(2+), Pb(3+), Bi(2+), and Bi(3+) - while the plasma is dominated by singly and doubly charged ions - Al(+), Cu(+), Cu(2+), Pb(+), Pb(2+), and Bi(+). This effect is observed both at the axis and over the entire beam of collectively accelerated ions.
