Shear-free interaction of two isotropic turbulent fields
Abstract
The generation of a simple turbulent flow by an oscillating grid consisting of two parts with different rod diameters and steps between rods is considered. This flow is characterized by an absence of averaged-velocity shear and by a pronounced nonuniformity of the spatial distribution of the statistical characteristics of velocity fluctuations. It is shown that there exists a region in which the flow is self-similar. The results are pertinent to the analysis of the interaction of turbulent fields, involving such phenomena as the evolution of a boundary layer, jet, or wake in a turbulent outer flow.
