Oscillatory alpha-squared dynamo
Abstract
The imaginary part of the alpha-squared dynamo increment is determined using an asymptotic approach. The result obtained can be used to explain the long-period oscillations of the magnetic fields of celestial bodies. An estimate of the oscillation period of the outer core of the earth is obtained which is close to the observed mean time between revolutions of the geomagnetic field.
