A caseium atomic beam spectrometer
Abstract
Fundamental information on small size cesium atomic beam spectrometers designed for transportable cesium standards is discussed. The physical foundations of this type of spectrometer are reviewed, addressing the properties of the cesium atom, the space separation of the quantum states, the atomic beam technique, the excitation process for quantum transitions, the detection of the state of polarization of an atomic beam, and the spectrometer's principle of operation. The construction of the spectrometer is considered, including the design principles, the beam forming assembly, the separating magnets, the resonator and the magnetic screens, and the ionizing detector. The spectrometer properties are described, and the resonator frequency shifts of the spectrometer and the tuning error signal are discussed.
