Spontaneous emission and laser oscillation from vibrational levels of molecular defects in solids
Abstract
A brief overview of recent observations of IR fluorescence and laser emission from vibrational levels of CN - ions embedded in alkali-halide lattices is presented. Although fluorescence is observed in the entire temperature range of 1.7-600 K, lasing occurs only at temperatures less than 4 K. Phonon-assisted vibrational energy transfer between CN - ions accounts for this behavior.
