Storage Ring Parameters for High Gain FEL
Abstract
One-dimensional free electron laser (FEL) theory is used to find criteria for choosing electron beam and undulator parameters for operation of a high gain FEL at 400 A. The criteria are (1) moderate electron beam energy (less than is 1 GeV), (2) high peak current (several hundred amperes), (3) small emittance (10 to the -8th m-rad), (4) small relative momentum spread (about 0.001), and (5) narrow undulator gap (about 3 mm). Results of two-dimensional simulations on FEL performance are also presented.
