Periodic Structure Studies
Abstract
The propagation characteristics of a uniform waveguide are profoundly modified by means of periodically spaced obstacles. Approaches for studying propagation in a waveguide system are examined, taking into account the differential equations describing propagation in a uniform waveguide system, the use of the so-called Smith chart, analytical means to explain the effect of periodic loading, results for shunt loading, a resonant cavity, a chain of resonant cavities, and the three obstacle resonant cavity. It is shown that the behavior of a set of obstacles can be studied on the basis of relations to resonant cavities. A more general treatment of the problem of obstacles follows from a matrix analysis of an indefinitely large number of obstacles periodically spaced in an otherwise uniform waveguide.
