The polymorphism of MgH2 at pressures up to 12 GPa
Abstract
The results of an X-ray diffraction analysis of the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of MgH2 are presented. It is found that graduated pressure increases at room temperature produce the following structural transitions in MgH2: a rutile transition; an alpha-type PbO2 transition; and a distorted fluorite transition. The exact pressures for each of the three transitions were 2.5 + or -0.5 GPa, 8.0 + or -1.0 GPa, and 10 GPa, respectively. The experimental data are summarized in a series of tables.
