Thermophoresis of a spherical aerosol particle at arbitrary Knudsen numbers
Abstract
Most of the results reported in the literature on the problem of the motion of an aerosol particle in a temperature gradient field (thermophoresis) concern flows with Knudsen numbers either much less than 1 or approaching infinity. Here, a solution to the problem of the thermophoresis of a spherical solid particle in a monoatomic gas is presented for arbitrary Knudsen numbers. The problem is solved for the steadystate case using linearized kinetic equations with molecular collision operators in the form of the BGK and S models.
