Thermophoresis of a spherical aerosol particle at arbitrary Knudsen numbers
Abstract
Most of the results reported in the literature on the problem of the motion of an aerosol particle in a temperature gradient field (thermophoresis) concern flows with Knudsen numbers either much less than 1 or approaching infinity. Here, a solution to the problem of the thermophoresis of a spherical solid particle in a monoatomic gas is presented for arbitrary Knudsen numbers. The problem is solved for the steady-state case using linearized kinetic equations with molecular collision operators in the form of the BGK and S models.
