Cascade population mechanism in nitrogen lasers
Abstract
The relative contributions of the cascade and electron impact mechanisms to the population of the v=0 level of the B3Pi g state in an N2 laser are estimated quantitatively by using simple theoretical calculations to fit the 0-1 IR laser band spectra. In the low-pressure case, the contribution of the cascade mechanism is 70-90 percent, whereas in the high-pressure case the cascade mechanism contributes 20 percent and the electron impact mechanism 80 percent. This result for the high-pressure case is in agreement with the measurements of Kruger (1981).
