Conversion of transverse into longitudinal waves at an interface and the problem of sound generation by wall turbulence
Abstract
The conversion of transverse waves into longitudinal waves at an interface between two media is considered, and the possibility of diminishing the longitudinal wave amplitude is examined. It is shown that an appreciable reduction of that amplitude is possible only for waterlike media. It is demonstrated that the efficiency of conversion of a transverse into a longitudinal wave is slow if the densities of the medium differ only very slightly from one another and if the transverse wave velocities in both media are much smaller than the longitudinal wave velocity.
