Instability of laminar flows, nonlinear growth of fluctuations and transition to turbulence
Abstract
A number of topics of current interest are discussed, with special reference to problems of instability and transition. They concern the evolution of vorticity perturbations in a plane potential flow and their reception by the boundary layer at a stagnation point, the effect of external three-dimensional perturbations on the development of a Tollmien-Schlichting wave, longitudinal vorticity in a boundary layer and its effect on flow development, and instability in Hagen-Poiseuille flow.
