Potential models
Abstract
Spherical harmonics models of the Earth's gravitational potential are introduced. The utilization of orbit perturbation and surface data to construct the models is summarized. Comparison of geopotential models suggests that they are not accurate enough for geophysical and oceanographic satellite orbit determination, for studying the ocean geoid, or for geophysical studies in continental regions where gravity is only known through trajectory analysis.
