Technologies for intersatellite optical communications
Abstract
Intersatellite optical communications links using RF-excited CO2 lasers, diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers, optical power combining, and phased array formation with GaAlAs lasers are reviewed. Analysis includes the worst case, a maximum range of 40,000 km under solar conjunction conditions, and analog modulation. The analysis produces a definition of antenna diameter and prime power intervals. The systems were also compared with respect to beam pointing and tracking requirements, and mass/volume and lifetime expectations.
