Some results of the Marangoni free convection experiment
Abstract
Thermally induced Marangoni flows in a floating zone under a variety of imposed boundary conditions were investigated on Spacelab. Problems in measuring the velocity in the bulk fluid, and the implications of the values obtained that confirm the attainment of a Marangoni boundary layer regime are discussed. Heat transferred across the floating zone is considered. The method used to determine, from the measured temperature of the hot disk, the time evolution of the temperature of the cold disk and its steady state Nusselt number is given, and results obtained from one run are presented.
