Inter-orbit communications EURECA/OLYMPUS
Abstract
The geostationary OLYMPUS, operating as a data relay satellite, allows long-duration contact with the low-earth-orbiting EURECA for extended-time data transmission to a single ground station. OLYMPUS is equipped with two steerable 20/30 GHz antennas, one used to track EURECA and the other to establish contact with the dedicated ground station. Two 20/30 GHz transponders on board OLYMPUS operate in a bent-pipe repeater mode with no signal processing on the satellite for the forward or return link. The 20/30 GHz interorbit-communications link payload on EURECA is described in detail.
