Some perspectives on operating frequency increase in gyrotrons
Abstract
Potentialities are analyzed not only for the most popular device of the cyclotron resonance maser (CRM) family, the gyrotron, but for other possible varieties of CRM as well. Cyclotron resonance masers, as well as other Bremsstrahlung generators, combine the virtues of both classical microwave devices and quantum optical devices (lasers) and thus are attractive for mastering the intermediate millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Topics covered include: how high can magnetic fields be increased in gyrotrons? (to 30 T); can the gyrotron be operated at high harmonics? (answered in the affirmative); CRMs with Doppler frequency upconversion; submillimeter-wave gyrotron efficiency; and nonstationary processes in CRMs with extended interaction space.
