Linear thermomechanics of continuous media
Abstract
A linear mathematical model of the mechanics of a continuous medium is developed, extending the theory of virtual work to the space and time fields; both simple and isotropic media are examined. In a simple medium, the existence of temperature and entropy is shown to result from compatibility conditions on the elastic term of the stress tensor. These conditions are expressed as a system of three partial differential equations in the isotropic case. The expression for the heat-conduction inequality of a nonequilibrium system is found to lead directly to the Clausius-Duhem inequality. Supplementary terms involving operators with higher-order derivatives are required for more complex systems.
