Application of spacecraft technologies to direct broadcast satellite payloads
Abstract
The RF technology to be applied in DBS-TV payloads for U.S commercial use is surveyed. The operating conditions, coverage zones, spacecraft-bus constraints, and overall communications-subsystem design are discussed. Multiplexers (capable of meeting strict out-of-band-isolation, in-band-equalized-delay, and 0.15-percent-bandwidth requirements of the proposed systems) and 100-200-W TWT amplifiers are examined in detail and illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and graphs of output characteristics. The performance parameters of the amplifiers and the contributions of the various subsystem components to overall performance are presented in tables.
