Finite element simulations of flow past a backward facing step
Abstract
A numerical model is presented for two-dimensional laminar flow over a backward facing step accompanied by stress-free outflow conditions. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) govern the flow. A solution is generated using the Galerkin finite element approach with a penalty function, thereby tailoring the model to steady-state conditions and eliminating the pressure term in the NSE. Sample velocity solutions are provided for flows with Re of 50, 150 and 500.
