Results of load variations to correct nonuniformities caused by plasma effects in MHD generators
Abstract
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator performance and lifetime can be limited by anodic corrosion, current concentrations, and arcing between sidebar elements caused by voltage nonuniformities. These three limiting processes have occurred during testing at the Component Development and Integration Facility (CDIF). A technique is presented to adjust the Faraday load resistance profile in order to reduce electrical stresses on sidewalls of MHD generators. Results of a Faraday load shaping test conducted at the CDIF are presented along with the analysis of those results.
