Methods and problems of the practical stability of motion theory
Abstract
Analytical methods used to solve the problem of practical stability of motion in nonlinear and nonstationary systems are described. Emphasis is given to analytical solutions based on Liapunov (1892) stability theory. Among the techniques discussed are: general solution derived directly from analysis of the form of the system; the method of functions of Liapunov; and a comparative method. Liapunov's original definitions of the stability and instability of unperturbed motion are rejected in favor of a direct analytical approach.
