Shear surface acoustic waves at the interface of an elastic solid and a viscous fluid
Abstract
The effect of a viscous loading of the surface of an acoustic medium on the propagation of shear waves has been investigated theoretically. It is assumed that the acoustic medium is a class C(6 V) piezoelectric crystal with a hexagonal axis parallel to the Z axis. Shear oscillations in the medium are described by a modified Navier-Stokes equation. Values are obtained for the damping coefficients of Gulyaev-Bleustein waves for a strongly piezoelectric acoustic medium. It is shown that the damping of Gulyaev-Bleustein waves by an air load at a frequency of 10 to the 8th Hz may be many times greater than the intrinsic absorption in a strong piezoelectric.
