A study of embedded objects by means of near- and far-infrared observations.
Abstract
Six embedded pre-main-sequence objects with known luminosities have been repeatedly observed at 1 - 3.6 microns. All of these objects display variations on the order of several tenths of a magnitude over a few years' time. Three of the objects, NGC 2264-IRS, NGC 2071-IR and AFGL 961, have masses estimated to be in excess of 3 M_sun;, and the authors' observations are the first ones to demonstrate variability in embedded high mass objects. Some correlation is found between variability, embeddedness and age. The luminosities have been derived from balloon measurements at far infrared wavelenghts; for the star-forming regions associated with NGC 1999 and AFGL 961, some details about the observations and the analysis are given, since they have not been previously reported.
