Neodymium-glass pulsed laser system for studying nonlinear optical phenomena in gases
Abstract
A tunable high-power Nd:glass laser system which uses active mode locking is described. In order to achieve active mode locking, periodic Q-switching is combined with longitudinal mode-selection, resulting in a system which has simple design, high reliability, flexible modulation frequency, and relatively high output power. The laser system can be used for second and fourth harmonic generation and also to generate VUV radiation in gases in which nonlinear processes of order greater than or equal to 3 occur. The output power (0.1-0.3 GW), pulse length (400 ps), laser linewidth (0.2/cm), and tunable range (200 A) of the laser system meet the requirements of experiments on higher harmonic generation in gases and metal vapors. Preliminary experimental results are presented for seventh-harmonic generation in mercury vapor, and two-phonon resonance between the fourth and first signal harmonics is studied for this case.
