The ESA sea-observation satellite ERS-1. II - Payload-instrument measuring principles and specifications and the design of the ground segment
Abstract
The operational specifications of the instruments to be carried on the ERS-1 satellite are examined, including active microwave instruments (wind and wave scatterometers and imaging SAR), radar altimeter, along-track scanning radiometer/microwave sounder, laser retroreflector, and precise range and range-rate equipment. The 780-km circular orbit and North-Sea coverage pattern are described and illustrated with maps, and tables of specifications and a diagram of the ground-segment organization are provided. ERS-1 is scheduled for launch by Ariane-4 in 1988.
