Evaluation of one of the possibilities of increasing the accuracy of radar systems in range measurements
Abstract
The possibility of employing narrow-band FM signals with a rectangular envelope in range measurements is evaluated by comparing the temporal and spectral characteristics of these signals with the corresponding characteristics of multifrequency signals with bell-shaped envelopes. It is shown that signals with a rapidly oscillating phase-modulation function have a high range-measurement accuracy due to the rectangularity of the envelope fronts and an efficiency of sidelobe reduction equal to that of multifrequency signals with a cosine-squared envelope. It is concluded that narrow-band FM signals of the type studied are suitable for use in range-measurement systems with high frequency-resolution requirements.
