Excitation of Gaussian helicon beams in a magnetized solid-state plasma
Abstract
The existence of slightly divergent Gaussian helicon beams in a magnetized solid-state plasma is demonstrated. Attention is given to an experimental method for the excitation of such beams by means of a current-carrying coil (a ring antenna). This technique is applicable in a wide frequency range, from several tens of Hz to several hundreds of MHz, with the helicon wavelength being about 1 mm. It is concluded that helicon beams have great potential for the detailed analysis of Gaussian millimeter and submillimeter waves using radio-frequency oscillators (100 to 100-million Hz).
