Interaction of beams with a magnetoplasma in external electrostatic fields
Abstract
The interaction of two charged-particle beams modulated by an external electrostatic field and focused by a strong magnetic field is analyzed in the linear approximation. Particular consideration is given to conditions in which an external modulating field and intrinsic waves of the system (longitudinal and electromagnetic) participate in the interaction. It is shown that the presence of a second beam can lead to the competition of the parametric and beam mechanisms of instability and makes it possible to control the instability. Increments and thresholds of instability are calculated. An appropriate choice of the magnitude of the modulating field and the beam velocity makes it possible to achieve a maximum increment (of the order of the parametric one) as well as a minimum increment, which corresponds to the development of ordinary beam instability.
