Optimization of far-IR and submillimeter laser resonators
Abstract
A combined examination of similarity laws and resonator characteristics is used to analyze the optimal conditions of operation for HCN, H2O, D2O, and similar lasers. Expressions are obtained which make it possible to determine the output power as well as the optical and critical resonator dimensions, for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous gain-line broadening. Waveguide, confocal, and plane-parallel resonators are examined, and results are presented for an H2O gas-discharge laser operating at 27.97 microns.
