Localization of normal modes by pinned solitons
Abstract
The localization of normal modes in the Frenkel-Kontorova model is discussed. The system is assumed to be vibrating about a metastable configuration in the pinned regime. The soliton disorder is characterized by a probability distribution for the soliton-soliton separation. The mechanism for localization is phase randomization which gives rise to asymptotically exponential behavior. When the distortion pattern around a soliton permits an odd number of local modes the system will exhibit a Ramsauer effect, i.e., there will be a wave number for which the normal modes cannot be localized by soliton disorder.
