Fluctuations of VLF radio waves in the waveguide earth-ionosphere
Abstract
The available theoretical and experimental data on the fluctuations of VLF radio waves in the earth-ionosphere waveguide are presented in a systematic manner. Various stochastic models of the waveguide channel are examined, and a theoretical analysis of signal amplitude and phase fluctuations in plane and spherical waveguides is presented. Particular attention is given to signal statistics in the case of interference of several normal waves, a common occurrence in the VLF range. An allowance for the interference structure of the mean field makes it possible to explain certain fluctuation characteristics which until recently were considered anomalies.
