Geometry of a pulse transformer for electromagnetic launching
Abstract
The external field toroid wound with coaxial cable is recommended as the optimum transformer geometry. Though the external field toroid and the short solenoid resemble one another in time constant, degree of coupling with the coaxial cable method, and in total forces, the toroid demonstrates a more advantageous distribution of forces. The coaxial cable permits coupling factors between .99 and .999 to be achieved by the short solenoid and the external field toroid; because exploding wire fuses may dissipate up to 100 kJ, a maximum of 100 MJ can be transferred by the pulse transformer method. Also noted is that the external field toroid is compatible with force reduction concepts, which permit the reduction of compressive forces and the structure necessary to resist these forces.
