The brightest stars in the Magellanic Clouds and other late-type galaxies.
Abstract
This paper reviews properties of the brightest stars in the Magellanic Clouds and in other nearby galaxies. The most luminous stars in different spectral type groups are identified and compared with the population of luminous stars in our region of the Milky Way. The discussion centers on normal, single stars. Furthermore, the luminous blue variables known as S Dor or Hubble-Sandage variables are considered. Finally, the observed upper boundary to stellar luminosities and its relationship to massive star evolution is discussed.
