Satellite, auroral radar and ground magnometer observations of transient ULF pulsations
Abstract
High latitude transient Pc5 pulsations having period variation with latitude were examined using International Magnetospheric Study instruments. It is shown that the pulsations have the characteristics of toroidal resonances of individual geomagnetic field shells. Results for an event observed by GEOS 2, the Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar (STARE) and the Scandinavian Magnetometer Array are given. This event was generated by a compressional hydromagnetic pulse propagating within the magnetosphere. Ion mass densities in the equatorial plane are determined from 64 transient events observed by either STARE or the Slope Point radar in New Zealand. These mass densities require H+ ion densities in the range 1 to 10/cc and 50% 0+ ions at geosynchronous orbit.
