Certain properties of vortex spots in a boundary layer on a plate
Abstract
In recent experiments (Wygnansky et al., 1979), some new properties characterizing the propagation of vortex spots have been identified. In particular, it has been suggested that a laminar wave packet formed from weak perturbations has certain similarities with turbulent spots. The evolution of a wave packet is investigated here using the theory of free interaction whose results are valid in the asymptotic limit when the Reynolds number tends to infinity. The treatment is limited to two-dimensional perturbations, which have been demonstrated experimentally by Gilev and Kozlov (1980).
