Plane vortex flows of an ideal fluid
Abstract
A class of plane, unsteady, biharmonically time-dependent vortex flows is identified which includes Kirchhoff's elliptical vortex and Gerstner waves as particular cases. This class of flows incorporates vortex flows for which a frame of reference can be found where the paths of the liquid particles remain localized. The theory developed for these flows is used to investigate the self-consistent unsteady interaction between the vortex region and the external potential flow.
