The IR spectrum of laboratory synthesized polymeric residues
Abstract
The IR spectra of solid residues obtained by bombarding hydrocarbons frozen on KBr matrices with fast protons are presented. A common dominant IR feature near 3.4 μm resembles that observed in some astrophysical sources. These results and others obtained by bombarding C-rich mixtures suggest that the 3.4 μm feature, typical of -CH2 and -CH3 groups, is produced independently of the original hydrocarbon and of the physical conditions during the condensation.
