Use of Deo's classification system on rock
Abstract
The use of Deo's classification system was evaluated using a Virginia shale from Route 23 in Wise County, and the lowest percentage of concentrated sulfuric acid that would rapidly break down a Millboro type shale was determined. It was concluded that Deo's system should be made more severe for use on shale found in Virginia by running at least five cycles of the various tests, and by giving precedence to observation of the physical condition of the rock that has been tested over the indices for the various tests. The solution of 25% of concentrated sulfuric acid was the lowest concentration that would rapidly break down the Millboro type shale. A methodology by which a Millboro type shale could be identified was recommended for adoption as part of the preliminary engineering procedures.
