Results of foil cloud experiments performed at Esrange (Kiruna, Sweden) and Andenes (Andoya, Norway) during the Energy Budget Campaign, November 1981
Abstract
Wind velocity profiles from 95 km altitude downwards were obtained. Results of three rocket flights of foil cloud experiments with ultralight 5 band radar chaff are described. One flight was performed under magnetically quiet conditions. The others were launched when conditions were disturbed. (Increase of magnetic activity, increasing riometer absorption during flight). Flights show intercepts by transient wave motions at certain heights. The velocity and direction of propagation of these disturbances were determined. Results suggest auroral activity as the source of the transient wave motions. The quasiperiods of the transient motions observed by the foil cloud experiment agree with periods of infrasonic waves observed on the ground during auroral activity.
